Waterfall Ice Climbing and Avalanches by Parks Canada

Parks Canada rates the avalanche terrain above Massey's as "Complex - Class 3" on the Avalanche terrain Exposure Scale (ATES).  Routes in Complex terrain are exposed to steep, open terrain, multiple avalanche starting zones and terrain traps. In Complex terrain, an avalanche greater or smaller than a size 3 is predicted to run each year. Complex/Class # terrain is the most dangerous terrain to be travelling through the backcountry. Clients were not informed of the class of terrain they were climbing, and when asked why were not informed of the ATES rating of Massey's, Sarah Hueniken responded, "if we told clients how dangerous the terrain we climb in was, no one would ever go!"
